Learning How to Read Alien Text

I liked the idea of getting to see a human have their own sort of 'sanctuary' within this alien world, where one could escape to temporarily and be surrounded by things that are familiar to them. I think that we all have a place like this that we go to, whether to find comfort or to recharge. These places become even more important when faced with a lot of change or unfamiliarity in our lives. In this painting we get to see a human in their own alien-world living space, surrounded by their familiar human objects.

The lone alien objects in this picture are the computer and text discs that sit in front of the person on his desk. The initial idea that I had for this painting was to have the person engaging in some sort of comforting, solitary activity. But when contemplating what specific activity this should be, I instead came up with the idea that the person in this space would actually be trying to teach themselves how to read the written text that the aliens in this world use. I thought this idea was more effective, as it would be a necessary skill for a human to learn for both growth and survival in this world, and learning it would be a realistic challenge that a human in this situation would have to face. As the guy in this picture tries to teach himself another language, he can at least take solace in the fact that his struggles are taking place within the privacy of his own living space.
